Sam Saved a Soldier
By Dani K., 6th Grade
[3] Proudly, Sam, a ten-year-old boy, marched with two soldiers. During 1864 in Kentucky, there was a neighborhood warning, as (cl) it was the time of the Civil War. Sam was recruited (sv) to the war effort as a drummer boy. A drummer boy’s job was to communicate with the soldiers using the beat of their drums. They also rescued the wounded. [2] At the start of the war, Sam felt nervous (qa) about joining the army, but still wanted to help the union, which (w/w) was fighting against slavery. Soon enough, he and the soldiers were bravely (ly) heading into battle.
[2] After the fourth year of the war, Sam was shocked to find two injured (qa) soldiers on the ground. They seemed to have been shot by confederates. One was already dead while (cl) the other was wounded and twisting in pain. [3] Alarmedly, Sam looked for anyone else, but he was alone. He summoned (sv) all of his strength to carry the soldier, who(w/w) was unconscious at the time. The soldier was heavy, but Sam knew that it was important to get him to the base so he managed. Finally, (ly) Sam arrived at base with the soldier.
After he got the soldier to safety, Sam won an award for being a hero. [2] To his surprise, many people clapped for him, which (w/w) made Sam feel proud. He was overjoyed as (cl) another soldier handed him a shiny (qa) gold award. Over time, the wounded soldier recovered(sv) and gratefully (ly) thanked Sam. [3] Famously, Sam was forever remembered as a hero for saving the soldier.
