The Lighthouse of Alexandria

By Hamin S., 6th Grade

Standing boldly on the island of Pharos, the ancient Egyptians constructed one of the incredibly (voc) tall Seven Wonders of the Ancient World known as the Lighthouse of Alexandria. This lighthouse rose an impressive one hundred meters above the sea. With no electricity at the time, a fire provided light at night and smoke by day. It also allowed sailors to see the lighthouse from far away. The elevators helped with carrying the fuel to the fire that provided the light at night and smoke at day. A large curved mirror reflected light at the top of the tower. According to ancient stories, the Egyptians smartly(ly)made this mirror focus sunlight on enemy ships, setting them to fire. Sadly(ly), earthquakes destroyed this wonder of the early(ly) world in the 1300s.
